
Water Toys
Recommended age group: All ages, depending on the type and
purpose of the toy.
Warning: Water toys are not life saving devices. Life saving
devices are covered by specific Australian Standards.
The Consumer Product Safety Standard for Children's Floatation Toys
and Swimming Aids covers floatation toys used by children under 15 years
old. The standard defines a floatation toy as a device that provides
buoyancy but is not attached to the body. These toys include rings,
inflatable arm bands, kick boards and inflatable toy boats.
Blow-up arm bands
These must be marked - Warning, Use Only Under Competent Supervision.
Blow up arm bands are placed on the child's upper arms. They are not
designed to keep the child in a safe position.
Blow-up rings
These must be marked - Floatation Toy, Warning Use Only Under
Competent Supervision. The purpose of this toy is to keep a child on the
surface of the water. This can be used as a tool in training your child
to swim.
Kick boards
These should be marked - Warning, Use Only Under Competent
Supervision. They are useful tools to help children develop their
kicking skills and gain confidence in the water.
Floating pillows and li-los
These toys are designed to provide a means of resting or playing on
the water. They are not a life saving devices nor intended to help young
children to swim.
Face masks and goggles
These are not designed for underwater diving. Swimming goggles have a
separate lens for each eye. Face masks have one large lens covering eyes
and nose and are designed for underwater diving. It is important to
purchase the correct size for your children.
Flippers
This toy helps improve your child's power to kick. They are not
swimming aids. It is important to purchase the correct size, the type of
flipper may depend on its intended use.
