Guns-Toy Pistols and Projectile Toys

Recommended age group: 7 years and older.

Toy guns which are adapted to fire 'modified missiles like pens, pins or ball bearing can be dangerous. A toy gun should have a barrel plug to prevent the use of missiles. Children should always be supervised when using toy guns and never allow them to fire close to another person's face.

Spark guns

Check the sparks inside the gun when operated. Avoid guns that discharge sparks or tiny hot particles that could hit eyes and cause injury.

Cap guns

Warn children not to fire cap guns close to the face, ears or eyes to avoid injuries. Ensure children understand the safe use instructions for cap guns. Only use cap guns outdoors and under adult supervision.

Roll Caps

Are Small strips of rolled paper, with tiny dots of explosive powder inside their length? They unroll as the caps are fired by a trigger operated hammer and lever mechanism.

If you buy a gun for children aged 7 years below, avoid roll cap firing guns which discharge the cap outside and where remain materials from fired cap may be thrown off into user's face.

Ring Caps

Tiny plastic percussion caps containing explosives commonly made in a circular molding that are contained and fired in revolving cylinder inside the gun.

Beware of any ring cap guns with hollow short plastic barrels in the end non-metal barrels. This design, combined with rapid and repeated firing of caps may cause hollow plastic barrels to flare-up. Buy either metal toy guns or those with solid barrels to avoid this problem. Be aware of where cap blast exit cap guns with solid barrels to avoid injuries.

Cork guns

Toy guns that shoot corks from the end of the barrel often use a compressed air system for firing. Attach each cork securely to the gun by a strong cord. Warn children not to fire cork close to the face to avoid injuries.

Water pistols

Water pistol with a range of a meter or two is not dangerous, provided only water is squirted from it.

Water guns

Water guns that work on manual compression and have a range of 10 meters or more can be dangerous and are of great concern to State and territory consumer affair agencies. The high compression stream of water from these water guns can cause serious eye or ear injuries at close range. Supervise and educate the children not to discharge high pressure water guns at people's head to avoid injuries.

Dart guns

When you buy guns that fire darts and other missiles shaped rockets, make sure it has protective tip attached firmly to the shaft and the tip should not form a dangerous sharp edge or point. Educate the children not to fire the dart or projectile at people or animals to avoid bodily injury.
