Dolls and Accessories
Recommended age group: all ages, depending on the
type of doll.
Limb and attachment
If some parts are pulled away from the body of the doll, they should not
expose sharp wires from the inside of the body. Any doll's limb or parts
that can be removed should not be small enough to be swallowed or
inhaled by a young child.
Construction material
Plastic should be flexible especially if the doll is likely to be taken
to bed. Rigid or plastics are not comfortable to lie on and if they
break, they can form sharp edges which are dangerous.
Wooden dolls should have smooth surfaces and free from splinters. They
should not contain joining nails or screws and the joins should be
firmly glued.
Avoid buying small metal dolls or figures for children aged less than 8
years. These are choking hazards that can contain or coated with toxic
elements. Metal dolls must not have dangerous sharp edges.
Eyes and buttons
These small parts must be fixed securely to the doll or its clothes so
they cannot be easily removed by pulling or chewing. They should be made
from non-toxic materials.
Clothes
They should be made from non- flammable materials and must be clearly
stated on the labeling. Check doll clothing for any small parts that can
be removed easily. Bows, ribbons or other material adornments are a
choking hazard to children below 3 years.
Pins
Pins must not be included in any part of a doll, remove it immediately
if they are included. Nappies and other clothes designed to be removed
from the doll must be fixed with clips or other fastening systems.
Handbags and purses
Any decorations on handbags and other fashion accessories like glitters
or sequins must be securely attached onto the accessory.
Jewelry
Strings of beads must be strong and knotted between each bead to prevent
loss of beads if the string breaks. Loose beads are easily swallowed or
inhaled. Don't choose jewelries made from seeds as they can be
poisonous.
