Chemistry Set
Recommended age group: 10 years and older.
While most dangerous chemicals have excluded from chemistry sets, a
mixture of harmless chemicals can be dangerous in inexperienced hands.
Some dangerous things like Bunsen burners are essential to the proper
functioning of chemistry sets and are usually included.
The Australian Standard for Children's Toys – Toxicological Requirements
( AS 1647.3-1995) states that the package of a chemistry set should have
a warning label in English
clearly describing the nature of hazard. Labels like 'poisonous
chemicals' or 'gas burnerincluded', and a statement that the set is
intended for a child aging 10 years or more and must only be used under
adult supervision.
Burners are included in some chemistry sets to heat and speed up
reactions of chemicals. Burners may be gas operated or operate on
methylated spirits. Keep them out of reach of younger children and only
used by older children under supervision.
Remember, the spirit or fumes of spirit burners could be inhaled or
swallowed, affecting a child's breathing and if spilled the spirits can
cause fires.
Keep the chemistry sets out of reach of young children. Experiments
including chemicals should only be done in the presence of a responsible
adult.
